Imagined Cartography (2014)

This body of work came out of an analog photography project in 2014. The interlacing of images hints at the complexity of visual representation and the lasting impact of colonial thinking. Working primarily with archival maps and portraits of collaborators from China, the DRC, Sri Lanka and the US, the project begs multiple questions of identity and agency. To what extent is one's personhood imbricated in the colonial and nationalist paradigms of representation? Is there alternative modes of imagining that question, refute, and transform the way one thinks of oneself and the world?
